TO SEE | FESTIVAL
The summer season has started, which means a lot of estivales, festivals, fêtes and other parties are organised. So many choices! As I heard of le Théâtre de la Mer in Sète, a really cool theatre with a magnificent view at sea, I wanted to check it out. And it happened to be the Worldwide Festival, a seven-day and night clubbing festival. No need for more reasons to go.
Originally, the theatre was a fort. This Fort Saint-Pierre was built between 1743 and 1746 to defend the port of Sète against the English attacks. After being a prison and hospital, a theatre was created in 1960. At first, it was only meant for theatre plays, but luckily music concerts were allowed soon enough. The venue has great acoustics and is made for music.
Chéri and I arrived when the sun went down, and we were treated with an amazing view. What a magical place! And that was before the music started. The theatre fits about 1,500 people, which makes it very intimate. And did I mention the view? Ah, the view… It really is the perfect venue: listening to great music in the open air with a lovely sea breeze and a beautiful clear starry night sky.
As the night fell, we enjoyed the tunes of Indian percussionist Sarathy Korwar. To be followed by the jazzy orchestral soundtracks of The Cinematic Orchestra. What a night! But don’t worry if you missed it, there are plenty of opportunities to go to a concert or festival this summer. To name a few: Jazz à Sète, K Live, Fiest’A Sète, My Life Festival. And many, many more! It’s going to be a good summer at the Théâtre de la Mer.
